BUFFALO - Today, Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane unveiled a plaque in the library of the Erie County District Attorney's Office to honor the service of a prosecutor who was tragically killed in the line of duty 37 years ago.
On the evening of Thursday, October 6, 1988, Assistant District Attorney Timothy Burvid was driving to Lancaster Town Court when his vehicle was hit head-on by another driver on Walden Avenue near Central Avenue. Assistant DA Burvid was extricated from the wreckage by members of the Lancaster Volunteer Fire Company before he was transported to St. Joseph Hospital where he died from the injuries. He was 26 years old.
Every year, the Erie County DA's Office presents a wreath at the Law Enforcement Memorial Service at St. Joseph Cathedral where the name of Assistant DA Burvid is read among the names of fallen officers from law enforcement agencies across Western New York.
Assistant DA Timothy Burvid was the son of the late Anthony Burvid, Sr., who rose to the rank of deputy police commissioner during his 36-year career with the Buffalo Police Department, and his wife, Mary Ann "Bess" (O'Neill) Burvid. This afternoon, our office held a small ceremony to celebrate his life and service with his family, including his twin brother, Tom Burvid, his sister-in-law, Jeanne, his nephew, Tim Burvid and his fiancé Katelyn Meier, and his nephew Buffalo Police Officer AJ Burvid.
