Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 6500, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Extension Act:
"Today's passage of H.R. 6500 represents a critical step in reaffirming the United States' longstanding commitment to economic partnership and shared prosperity with sub-Saharan Africa. By extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), Congress has provided much-needed certainty to businesses, workers, and governments that rely on this program to promote trade, investment, and sustainable economic growth.
AGOA has played a vital role in strengthening U.S.-Africa relations by expanding market access, supporting job creation, and encouraging economic diversification across the region. This extension ensures continuity for American and African businesses alike while reinforcing the importance of predictable, rules-based trade relationships.
As we move forward, it is essential that AGOA continues to evolve to reflect our shared values and common objectives including continental integration, reciprocity, sustainability, and inclusive economic development. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress, the Administration, and our African partners to build on this progress and to further strengthen this important mutually beneficial trade framework.
The African Growth and Opportunity Act keeps American businesses competitive, creates jobs at home and abroad, and strengthens fair trade with Africa. This legislation is a win-win and is good for workers, good for the economy, and good for America."
