WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Joni Ernst (R-IA) along with Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC), Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, issued the below statement regarding the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation's (DFC) support to Syria.
"We commend Syria's Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, under the leadership of Minister Hind Kabawat, for updating Syria's Assad-era labor law in consultation with Syrian stakeholders and experts. We look forward to swift action once the law is sent to the new People's Assembly. Under U.S. law, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) may only support projects in countries that are taking steps to adopt and implement laws that extend internationally recognized worker rights. We are pleased to see Syria take these steps and look forward to hearing how the DFC plans to support projects in Syria. After decades of dictatorship and civil war, DFC support will be critical in helping the Syrian people build a more prosperous and secure future."
