RESEARCHERS: Prior Approval Requirement for Changes to Domestic Subawards

NOT-OD-26-026

New NIH Subaward Approval Requirement

Starting June 1, 2026, researchers must get NIH prior approval before adding a domestic subaward to an active grant if it wasn't part of their original approved application. Submit requests via the eRA Commons Prior Approval Module using the "Other Request" type. This closes a longstanding gap that made federal transparency compliance (FFATA) difficult to monitor.

Reminder: Since May 2025, NIH no longer recognizes foreign subawards. New international collaborations must use the PF5/UF5 mechanism instead.
