SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Shepherd University is implementing a strategic academic realignment designed to expand multidisciplinary learning opportunities and better prepare students for today's evolving workforce. The realignment integrates related areas of study to reflect how industries increasingly intersect.
"We are aligning programs more intentionally," said Dr. Jack DeRochi, Shepherd's provost and vice president for academic affairs. "This approach creates a more cohesive academic experience that supports innovation, creativity, and career readiness."
A key example of the strategic realignment is the newly formed School of the Arts and Media, which brings together music, contemporary art, communication, and theater. This structure leverages the strengths of our music program and community engagement enterprise to facilitate a collaborative environment that expands opportunities for students to explore digital media, storytelling, production, and other emerging methods shaping the arts. Another example is the new College of Business and Technology, which brings together high-demand, workforce-oriented programs under a unified structure that integrates business, applied technology, and innovation.
The academic structure now organizes programs under three colleges: the College of Business and Technology; the College of Science, Health, and Wellness; and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Additional updates include the formation of the Department of Business and Sports Administration and a new Department of Psychology, Social Work, and Counseling, reinforcing Shepherd's commitment to growth in high-demand fields related to health, allied health, and wellness.
"We received extensive feedback from our faculty and staff across the University during this process, and the result will be beneficial for the entire University," DeRochi said. "This realignment allows us to better connect disciplines, strengthen our academic offerings, and ensure our students are prepared for a rapidly changing professional landscape."
The Shepherd University Board of Governors approved the academic realignment during its meeting on Thursday, April 16.
