Fast facts:

  • Grant applications are due Wednesday, Dec. 23.

LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced today the second round of the Michigan Maritime and Port Facility Assistance Grant Program is now accepting applications for commercial port infrastructure improvement projects. The program aims to strengthen Michigan's economic competitiveness, reduce freight transportation costs, improve system reliability and mitigate the environmental impacts of freight movement.

"Our ports and maritime facilities are critical connectors for Michigan's industries and communities. This grant funding reinforces MDOT's commitment to help modernize maritime infrastructure, enhance safety and expand capacity across the state's transportation system," said State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich. "While this is one-time funding, we will continue to work with our partners on a long-term, sustainable funding source to build a stronger, more efficient maritime network that supports Michigan's economy."

Created through legislation signed into law in 2022, the Maritime and Port Facility Assistance Grant Program received a one-time appropriation of $5 million in MDOT's Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 budget.

Applications are due by Wednesday, Dec. 23. Project selections will be made within 90 days of the application deadline (it is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete required approvals and award a contract). A fully executed contract is required before any reimbursable costs can be incurred.

Completed applications and questions should be submitted to Elisha Wulff, MDOT freight policy specialist, at [email protected] or 517-243-3620.
