Meet Clare James Johnson, ReMA’s New Vice President of Communications

On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, ReMA welcomed Clare James Johnson as the new Vice President of Communications. Johnson has more than 20 years of experience scaling and transforming brands, developing communications strategy, and leading high performing teams, most recently as Managing Director of Communications at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

ReMA News chatted with Johnson about her background and experience in the communications space, why she decided to take this job with ReMA, and what she's looking forward to most about working at the association.

Tell me about your position at ReMA.

As ReMA's Vice President of Communications, I'm responsible for leading the team that's in charge of telling ReMA's story and translating our strategy, achievements, and the hard work of our members into a compelling narrative for our key audiences. Communications is no longer just about creating awareness - it's about shaping the story, driving advocacy and moving the industry forward.

Can you tell me about your background and experience in the communications space.

I have about 20 years of experience in communications including over a decade of experience at some of the largest trade associations in Washington, D.C. Immediately prior to ReMA I was with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), where I led integrated communications and engagement strategies for one of the nation's largest manufacturing sectors, influencing federal and state debates on energy, supply chain, and domestic investment. I have also worked at the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), so I'm excited to bring my experience at the intersection of manufacturing, energy, and technology to this role at ReMA.

How did you decide to apply for the role at ReMA?

I was excited for the chance to work with my former colleague Paul Hartgen, who serves as ReMA's Senior Vice President of Growth, Strategy & Operations. In addition, the recycled materials industry is at a pivotal point. The industry is now part of some major conversations taking place globally around supply chain resilience, domestic manufacturing, and critical minerals. Communications leadership is crucial at this time and there's an opportunity to connect the dots for policymakers, the media, and the public about how recyclers are supporting economic strength, job growth, and safety and sustainability efforts.

What are you looking forward to tackling in the role?

The storytelling aspect of the role is very appealing to me. ReMA members are doing essential work that's typically behind-the-scenes, whether that's recovering materials, supporting manufacturing, enabling businesses to remain competitive, or keeping resources in use. I think these stories are often untold or under-told, so I'm looking forward to shining a spotlight on the great work our members are doing.

What hobbies/interests do you like to do outside of the office?

I'm an avid reader and I also enjoy thrifting and creating a bit more circularity in the fashion industry. I'm also working on a fun project with my son. We're trying to walk every street in our neighborhood in Washington, D.C. We have a little map that we use to keep track of each street and cross out the ones we've done. It's a fun way for us to get outside and connect with each other and an enjoyable challenge.
