Ribbon Cutting Set to Celebrate Completion of Oak Shade Cemetery Crypt Wall

The City of Marion will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Noon on Thursday, May 28, to celebrate the completion of a project to restore the crypt wall at Oak Shade Cemetery, 789 2nd Avenue, Marion.

Oak Shade Cemetery was established in the early 1840s, before Iowa was a state. The crypt wall is a unique feature of the City-owned cemetery.

In 2021, the crypt wall at Oak Shade began to show signs of deterioration and continued to worsen. With the help of the Friends of Oak Shade Cemetery, City leaders solicited a feasibility study to determine the options for repairing the historic structure.

Several Marion-based businesses were part of this effort, including Martin Gardner Architecture, Rathje Construction, Murdoch Funeral Homes & Cremation Service and Wilbur Vault.

Join City leaders and Chamber ambassadors on Thursday, May 28, to learn more about the project and celebrate its completion.
