Rep. Nancy Mace Demands EPA And DOT Intervene Following Multiple Chemical Spills At Silfab Solar Facility Next To Elementary School

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 6, 2026) - Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-SC) today sent a letter to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean Duffy demanding immediate federal intervention following multiple chemical spills at Silfab Solar's Fort Mill, South Carolina facility, located directly adjacent to a public elementary school.

"A solar company spilled toxic chemicals next to an elementary school, hid it from the public for six days, was ordered to shut down, and is planning to reopen anyway. This is unacceptable," said Congresswoman Mace. "The EPA and DOT need to step in now. South Carolina families deserve answers, and they deserve to know their children are safe."

On March 3rd, Silfab Solar reported a spill of up to 1,500 gallons of water containing potassium hydroxide. The company later claimed the spill was only 300 gallons. Days later, on March 5th, a separate leak of hydrofluoric acid was reported, a highly corrosive substance capable of degrading concrete, metal, and asphalt. Silfab Solar admitted they discovered the hydrofluoric acid leak on February 27th but did not inform the public until six days later.

The chemical spills have already forced a school closure in the area. Despite being ordered by the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services to immediately cease operations, Silfab Solar has indicated it intends to resume operations.

Congresswoman Mace is demanding the facility remain closed until:

  • The cause of the chemical spills is fully explained
  • A complete accounting of the impact on public safety, education, and transportation infrastructure is provided
  • Silfab Solar explains how it will prevent future spills and leaks

"Silfab Solar has dismissed the concerns of parents and local residents as 'unfortunate' and 'unexpected'," Mace continued. "We are not moving on until we have the full truth."
