Contra Costa County - Starting Monday, July 13, 2026, Caltrans will conduct nightly drilling and emergency retaining wall repairs near the El Nido Ranch Road Underpass on eastbound SR-24. The right shoulder and lane #4 will be closed each night, weather permitting. This essential work is required to stabilize this section of SR-24, address settlement issues, and ensure long-term safety for motorists.
The project will begin with drilling operations. Following this, the current plan is to install a K-Rail barrier on the right shoulder and continue working on the retaining wall during daytime hours.
Once the new retaining wall has been constructed, the next steps will include compaction grouting, repaving lanes 2, 3, and 4 as well as the right shoulder, replacing the guardrail, and removing a very large dead tree. This tree poses a risk to a nearby water tank below the hill if it falls and must be removed as part of the safety measures.
The tentative completion date for the entire project is October 1, 2026.
Changeable message signs will be in place to assist motorists traveling in the area. Motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra time. Please drive with caution through the construction zone.
