Secretary Hegseth and President Trump now say that the rationale for the Pentagon's restrictive new rules on journalists is the need for reporters to wear badges in the building and to limit their access to sensitive areas. But this has never been about badges, which reporters have always worn, or building access. Since the start of the Trump administration, New York Times journalists have adhered to the increasingly restrictive limitations on working spaces and their ability to move within unclassified areas of the Pentagon. And The Times has complied with whatever security rules have been in place for the more than 80 years it has reported from the building.
