Detroit announces 2026 Speed Hump program list: 312 new humps planned for safer neighborhoods

  • Detroit DPW releases list of planned speed hump locations
  • Residents have until April 24 to opt-out if their street is on the list
  • 11,412 speed humps installed in the city since 2016 program start

The City of Detroit Department of Public Works (DPW) plans to install 312 new speed humps this year on city residential streets where requests were received from residents who live on those blocks. Detroiters who don't want speed humps on their streets have until April 24th to opt-out of this year's program.

"Speed humps have been one tool that we have utilized to effectively address the problem of speeding and reckless driving and the installation of 312 more will further reduce the problem and provide safer streets on these residential blocks," said Ron Brundidge, DPW Director. "This program came about because we listened to the concerns of our residents and developed a solution the community has wholeheartedly embraced."

Prior requests will not need to be resubmitted, as they have already been evaluated for possible inclusion in this year's program. Brundidge also pointed out that a small number of speed humps approved last year that were not installed by the end of construction season due to ongoing utility or resurfacing work will be among the first for this year. Please check this map to see all of the installed locations through 2025.

Residents can view the 2026 list and opt-out by visiting the City of Detroit website: detroitmi.gov/departments/department-public-works/complete-streets/traffic-calming

As a reminder, the criteria for prioritizing speed hump installations is as follows:

  • Local residential streets with a speed limit of 25 mph
  • Priority given to streets adjacent to active schools and parks
  • DPD records of speeding and vehicle crashes
  • Street used as a known "cut through" to or from a major road
  • Block housing density
  • Number of school-aged children
  • Resident support on the block and valid request made

DPW strives for cleanliness, safety, and efficiency. DPW provides solid waste collection activities, facilitates the clearing of illegally dumped debris, provides construction and maintenance for city streets and sidewalks, snow and ice removal as well as maintains systems and devices for safe traffic flow.
