Washington, DC-Today, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau joined MCC leadership and officials from Côte d'Ivoire to sign the Côte d'Ivoire Regional Energy Compact agreement in the Treaty Room at the Department of State.
The compact is a major U.S. investment in strengthening Côte d'Ivoire's energy sector and advancing regional power integration across West Africa. Expanding access to reliable electricity will lower costs for families and businesses, boost private sector activity, and build a stronger foundation for cross-border trade-while also creating new opportunities for American companies and supporting U.S. jobs.
"This compact reflects President Trump's commitment to smart, accountable development that advances U.S. interests. A stronger energy sector in West Africa creates new markets for American companies, supports U.S. jobs, and contributes to regional stability that benefits us all," said Deputy Secretary Landau.
The Côte d'Ivoire Regional Energy Compact builds on MCC's proven record of partnering with governments to foster private sector growth, increase prosperity, and expand opportunity. MCC's prior compact in Côte d'Ivoire, signed in 2017 and closed in August 2025, invested more than $500 million to improve education and transportation infrastructure-upgrading critical road networks and preparing the next generation to enter the workforce, including through the construction of modernized TVET centers. MCC Acting Vice President for Compact Operations Jason Small will lead a delegation to Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire next week to celebrate the closure of that compact and complete the signing of the regional compact.
MCC Acting Vice President Small remarked, "Energy powers opportunity. By modernizing Côte d'Ivoire's electricity sector and connecting the region, this compact will strengthen West Africa's economies, benefit American companies operating in Côte d'Ivoire and the region, and open the door for U.S. businesses to find new trade opportunities. I look forward to joining our Ivoirian counterparts in Abidjan soon to celebrate the closure of one program and the start of a new partnership."
