NORWICH, CT - Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Ranking Member of the House Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, released the following statement on the Memorandum of Understanding for a ceasefire agreed to by the U.S. and Iran.
"First and foremost, it is notable that U.S. troops are one step closer to being moved out of harm's way. President Trump's four month go it alone war on Iran, which cost the lives of 14 servicemembers, limped to a halt this morning with a memorandum that provides nothing for the American people who are stuck with higher prices for gas, groceries and health care and a huge bill to pay for an operation that cost an estimated $200 billion," Courtney said. "The people of Iran are still stranded with a vicious regime, who stands to rake in billions in oil revenue and sanctions relief. All the promises of regime change, complete removal of nuclear material and missile stockpiles have come to naught. Trump's brazen disregard for the warnings of military and diplomatic experts and our allies abroad has resulted in a strategic blunder that will take years to correct. The failure of House Speaker Johnson and Senate Leader Thune to allow Congress to exercise the War Powers Act to rein in Trump's recklessness should not be forgotten in the wake of this debacle."
Courtney supports Ranking Members Smith, Meeks, and Himes' demand for immediate briefings by the Trump Administration to Congress on the details of the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding.
