"The Beckman Scholars Program is among the most prestigious and impactful awards an undergraduate can receive," said James Mack, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of chemistry.
"This distinction places our university alongside the nation's top institutions, opening new doors for our students and providing our distinguished faculty with enhanced opportunities to advance their research on a global scale."
The program will support six student scholar-faculty mentor pairs, with two named per year for the three-year award period.
"Fostering undergraduate researchers and inspiring them to explore new ideas and experiences under the guidance of excellent mentors is central to our Beckman Scholars Program," said Anne Hultgren, executive director and CEO if the foundation. "We look forward to welcoming these aspiring young scientists into our community of Beckman scholars."
As a Carnegie Foundation-designated research institution, UC's chemistry program provides opportunities for studies with the UC Genome Research Institute, UC College of Medicine, Children's Hospital and more.
UC's department of biological sciences has a wealth of collaborations nationally, as well as local organizations such as the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
"As a testament to the excellence of our students and faculty, I am confident that this recognition will serve as a powerful springboard, amplifying the impact our college can make," said Mack. "The Beckman Scholars Program will undoubtedly be a gateway to new partnerships and future achievements."
Since 1977, the foundation has followed its mission to give back to the scientific community. In addition to its scholars program, the foundation supports research centers at institutions such as Stanford University, the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
