Tapping into the power of collaboration, Johns Hopkins University and West Virginia University are launching a new partnership to bring together researchers from both institutions to address complex challenges in health, science and society while positioning faculty teams to compete for future external funding.
Announced during Friday's (June 19) WVU Board of Governors meeting, the initiative is designed to catalyze high-impact collaborations between faculty at both institutions. Through a new joint funding program, researchers will receive seed support to develop innovative projects, generate preliminary findings and build the foundation for larger externally funded research efforts.
"WVU is expanding upon our existing collaborations with Johns Hopkins University with this first-of-its-kind institutional-level partnership," WVU President Michael T. Benson said.
"At a time when the higher education landscape is rapidly changing, research institutions must find innovative ways to pursue funding and compete for federal dollars. By joining forces as two leading R1 institutions, our goal is to expand our research capacity and pioneer more breakthroughs, more discoveries, and more solutions to global challenges."
Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels remarked, "The JHU-WVU partnership reflects our shared commitment to expand opportunity for researchers, accelerate discovery, and show how institutions can collaborate to address challenges that affect communities across the nation. With this research collaborative, we can combine our expertise to deepen our researchers' impact."
At the center of the partnership is the JHU-WVU Research Collaborative, a three-year, $7 million investment of philanthropically secured funds intended to help faculty teams launch new research collaborations and compete for larger external funding opportunities.
The program will provide seed funding to cross-institutional teams with the goal of securing future external funding and building sustained partnerships. Johns Hopkins' existing Discovery and Catalyst Awards infrastructure will be leveraged to enable a rapid and efficient launch, with streamlined processes for application, review and award management.
Awards of up to $150,000 per project will support research efforts for as long as two years. The funding is intended to initiate new collaborations, generate preliminary data and position teams for competitive external funding opportunities. To ensure meaningful engagement between the universities, each proposal must be led jointly by two principal investigators - one from Johns Hopkins and one from WVU.
University leaders said they expect the initiative to foster collaboration across a broad range of disciplines while encouraging projects that build on areas of shared strength.
Priority areas include neuroscience research focused on substance use, mental health, dementia and neurosurgical interventions, as well as studies examining environmental exposures and population health. Researchers will also be encouraged to explore questions related to urban-rural health and well-being, drawing on the distinct experiences of communities in Baltimore and throughout West Virginia.
"Our goal is to spark collaboration among faculty and researchers through the JHU-WVU Research Collaborative," said incoming WVU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Beverly Wendland.
"We hope faculty at both institutions will leverage their strengths and creativity, collaborate on high-impact research projects, identify new areas of discovery, and competitively apply for seed funding that, ideally, positions these teams to secure external funding in the future. We are eager to support collaborations already underway among our research teams and spark new ones."
Beyond initial funding, the program is designed to foster sustained collaboration, visibility and downstream translation across Johns Hopkins and WVU. Faculty and trainees will have opportunities for visiting appointments at the partner institution, helping researchers establish deeper working relationships and share expertise across campuses.
The partnership will also support regular virtual seminars and faculty convenings that showcase funded projects, encourage knowledge exchange and spark new collaborations.
In addition, investigators will be encouraged to engage with Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures and the WVU Office of Innovation and Commercialization to explore intellectual property strategies, commercialization pathways and potential industry partnerships that can help translate discoveries into real-world impact.
The first application cycle for the JHU-WVU Research Collaborative is expected to open July 31.
