Nothing says "spring" quite like the sweet scent of steaming asphalt.
We're taking care of your streets to save time and money on bigger repairs. In the next few weeks, you'll see a postcard in your mailbox if your street is on our schedule for treatment, repair, or replacement. Or you can check our website to see if your street is on the list this year.
We have over 900 miles of road to maintain. That's the same distance as driving on I-80 to Omaha, Nebraska! Each year, our Streets Department decides which streets need the most attention and repair. The sooner we catch problems, the longer the life of the road.
We know construction can be annoying, but taking care of our roads before there are big problems makes us all safer and saves money. Thank you for your patience!
There are five ways we fix your roads to keep them safe for driving, listed from easiest to hardest (and most time-consuming):
Crack Repair - This is our first line of care. We fill cracks with a sticky, thick liquid that prevents further deterioration into major holes.
HDMB - High-Density Mineral Bond - This might look like we're watering the street! We're actually covering it with slurry that coats the asphalt and protects it from water, UV rays, and other damage that occurs over time.
Chip Seal - We spray down tack oil, then put some road stone on top and roll it into the chipped areas in the road.
Scrub Seal - When there are more cracks than a chip seal can handle, but no potholes, we'll do a scrub seal. We use tack oil, sweep road stone into the cracks, then use a roller to make it stick.
Mill and Overlay - This is our most time-consuming and expensive treatment. We grind down the existing top layer of asphalt and remove it. We spray tack oil, then lay new asphalt. We roll it flat and smooth. If manholes or valves have been buried, we raise them to the new street level. Then we repaint the road stripes.
We are also improving our ADA ramps on street corners. We put down colored tiles on the edge of street corners so people can feel when the sidewalk transitions into a street. We also change the slope of the sidewalk to make wheelchair access easier. Construction for these ramps may take a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
How will I know when my street will be worked on?
If a street in front of your house needs work, you will receive notice in the mail. When we're getting ready to start, you'll get a tag on your front door. You can also check our schedule here.
What if my driveway is blocked and I need to get out?
We do everything we can to keep you informed about when your road will be worked on. We will put up barricades the night before the project begins. You may need to find alternative parking if you plan to be in and out of your home while we're working on it.
What if my car is parked on the street?
We put up no-parking barricades and signs on the street the night before construction begins. If there's still a car on the road, we'll knock on doors to find who owns it. If we can't find anyone, we'll run the license plate and call the person registered to the car.
What if I have an emergency and need an ambulance/fire truck/police vehicle to come to my house?
Emergency vehicles will use the road in whatever condition - your safety is our priority.
How do you know what roads need repair?
We hire a contractor who uses a camera on a vehicle, and AI analyzes the condition of the road.
My street has a lot of cracks/potholes. Can you do my street next?
We prioritize the roads in the worst condition first. You can call and tell us about the condition of your road.
