City of Gainesville officials invite neighbors and visitors to celebrate the grand opening of The Streatery, the newly reconstructed pedestrian-friendly street in downtown Gainesville, on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026.
When: 5-11 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6
Ribbon-cutting ceremony: 5-6 p.m.
Where: The Streatery, Southwest First Ave. between South Main St. and Southwest Second St.
The celebration will feature live music, local food and family activities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the official opening of the renovated public space, which is able to accommodate outdoor dining, art and music festivals, farmers markets and other community events. Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward, interim City Manager Andrew Persons and Alachua County Commissioner Marihelen Wheeler are scheduled to deliver remarks before the ribbon cutting.
The curbless street features brick pavers and historic bricks as well as new outdoor lighting, seating, landscaping, electrical outlets and other amenities.
The Gainesville City Commission approved the concept plan to transform the two downtown blocks in October 2024. Later that year, the public participated in workshops to provide input on design options and amenities for the space.
Community members continued shaping the project in 2025. In April, neighbors were invited to submit name suggestions, generating nearly 1,000 entries. In June, more than 800 people voted on the finalists, with "The Streatery" receiving the most votes. The commission approved the name in August 2025. At the grand opening, attendees will have the opportunity to share ideas about the type of public art to be displayed on The Streatery.
The $4.5 million construction project, approved by the city commission in March 2026, is funded through the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area (GCRA) and the gas tax fund. GCRA is a 10-year program (2019-2029) administered by the city and funded by the city and Alachua County. Reconstruction of The Streatery began in April 2026 with replacement of underground electrical, water and stormwater infrastructure beneath the corridor and two intersecting streets.
The event is free and open to the public.
