Cassidy Supports National Defense Package, Secures Louisiana Investments

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) issued the following statement after voting to pass the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

"The Schumer Shutdown is harming families and denying our troops their pay," said Dr. Cassidy. "That's why Republicans are working to strengthen our defense, support Louisiana's military bases, and protect our troops."

Provisions Cassidy secured for Louisiana in the NDAA include:

Funding Amount Recipient Project Description
$18,000,000 Barksdale Air Force Base - Weapons Generation Facilities and Dormitory Supports major construction and modernization of nuclear mission infrastructure and housing improvements at Barksdale AFB.
$2,200,000 Barksdale Air Force Base - Child Development Center (Design Phase) Funds the design of a new on-base Child Development Center to expand family care capacity and address long waitlists.

The NDAA also includes language establishing a Military-Civilian Medical Surge Program as a program of record, building on Cassidy's prior $6 million in DoD funding that added LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) as an National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) pilot site. This will stabilize long-term funding, strengthen LSUHS's partnership with Barksdale and the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs, and enhance Louisiana's role in national disaster and medical readiness.Additionally, the NDAA increases authorization for shipbuilding and amphibious fleet programs, supporting Louisiana shipyards and strengthening America's maritime defense industrial base.
