Lexpert: Nuclear energy tapped to meet Canada’s electricity needs

Vivian Kung, partner in our Toronto office, was featured in a Lexpert article examining how growing electricity demand is accelerating interest in nuclear energy and small modular reactors (SMRs) across Canada.

The article explores the federal government's recently released Nuclear Energy Strategy and the role nuclear power may play in supporting Canada's expanding electricity needs, including demand driven by electrification, data centres and artificial intelligence.

Vivian notes that small modular reactors are moving from "policy ambition towards project development," driven by growing demand for reliable electricity and increasing interest in low-emitting energy solutions. The article also discusses the opportunities and challenges associated with SMR deployment, including regulatory approvals, financing, public and Indigenous engagement, and supply chain readiness.
