The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its concern regarding the inappropriate use of particular visual imagery to accompany an Op-Ed article published in the Phnom Penh Post on 16 May 2026 which risks fomenting misunderstanding.

Thailand believes that every country takes pride in its history, cultural heritage - including national attire - and institutions held in high regard by its people. All parties should therefore uphold the principle of mutual respect and refrain from presenting content that is provocative or detrimental to promoting goodwill between the people of the two countries.

Thailand supports freedom of expression, which must be exercised responsibly and with respect for cultural and social sensitivities. In this regard, the choice of accompanying elements to an article should take into account the appropriateness, context and their potential detrimental impact on public sentiment. Thailand hopes that the author of the Op-Ed and the media outlet concerned will be mindful of the implications of such communication and exercise greater caution and sound judgment in the future.
