CHICAGO - The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is proud to announce that the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) continued its accreditation of the department following the February 12, 2026 decision by the PHAB Accreditation Committee. This continued accreditation reaffirms CDPH's commitment to excellence, accountability, and national public health standards.
Achieving accreditation involves a rigorous multi-stage review, including documentation submission and a peer-review site visit. Health departments must demonstrate conformity with national standards and measures across multiple domains-typically 10 essential public health services, plus management and governance-spanning dozens of individual measures. The full review process generally takes up to 12 months for documentation, followed by another 6-9 months for peer review and site visits.
"Health and wellness are critical aspects of our work to build safe communities throughout our city, and this continued accreditation shows that Chicago is meeting the highest standards in caring for our residents," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. "I am proud of the work CDPH is doing to strengthen our public health system and expand access to the care and resources our communities need to thrive. This recognition reflects our commitment to equity, accountability, and sustained investment in public health infrastructure that supports the safety and dignity of every Chicagoan in every neighborhood."
"I'm proud that we have obtained accreditation from one of the most recognized organizations in our field," said CDPH Commissioner Olusimbo Ige, MD, MS, MPH. "This achievement reflects our deep commitment to ensuring that all Chicagoans have the opportunity to live healthier lives."
PHAB will provide CDPH with a formal notification letter and a plaque marking the next five-year accreditation period. The department will also continue to submit an annual report through PHAB's e-PHAB system and will receive additional communication materials to support public messaging around this achievement.
"This continued accreditation affirms the Chicago Department of Public Health's commitment to excellence, accountability, and strong public health systems," said Deputy Mayor Arturo Carrillo. "CDPH's work to meet national standards helps ensure that residents across Chicago can rely on high-quality, responsive public health services."
CDPH celebrates this milestone and remains dedicated to excellence in public health practice, transparency, and continuous improvement for the people of Chicago.
