Hoyer Statement on SCOTUS Decision Upholding the Firing of FTC Commissioner

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG), released the following statement after the Supreme Court upheld President Donald Trump's decision to terminate Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter:

"The Supreme Court's decision to uphold Donald Trump's decision to remove the only remaining Democrat on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) without cause further enables Trump's unprecedented power grab and undermines our constitutional system of checks and balances. As Justice Kagan argued, 'the majority, stay order by stay order, has handed full control of all those agencies to the President.'

"Congress wanted the FTC and other agencies like it to be independent and bipartisan. They no longer are now that the Supreme Court has granted the president the power to remove agency leaders on a whim. That undermines the vital work the FTC does to protect American consumers, Congress' authority, and the Constitution itself.

"This decision and the administration's rapacious and continuing actions to accrue more and more power to itself are directly at odds with the Constitution and our democracy."
