On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with President of Poland Karol Nawrocki, who was visiting Lithuania. The leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including regional security, the bilateral agenda, economic and cultural cooperation, support for Ukraine, EU defense industry initiatives, energy security and critical infrastructure, as well as matters related to national minorities.
"The Polish leader's decision to come to Vilnius as one of his first visits after assuming office demonstrates the special bond between our countries. Lithuania and Poland are connected not only by neighborhood but also by shared history, and common lessons in security and freedom. Poland is a strategic partner for Lithuania in the region," said the Lithuanian President.
The leaders focused on security - the most important issue in our region. They discussed ways to strengthen NATO's eastern flank, including air defense capabilities and a joint response to the threat posed by drones. "The permanent presence of U.S. forces in Lithuania and Poland is a strong deterrent, so we will continue to invest in infrastructure to ensure the best possible conditions for hosting our allies", said Mr. Nausėda.
The president emphasized that bilateral economic cooperation is highly important for Lithuania, as Poland is the country's largest trading partner, with trade worth nearly 10 billion euros per year. He stressed the ambition to develop joint projects in defense, high technology, energy, and transport.
Support for Ukraine was also discussed. According to Lithuania's leader, the goal is for Ukraine to receive all the necessary support: military, financial and political. President Nausėda underlined that lasting peace in Europe is possible only if Ukraine has strong armed forces and reliable security guarantees. The President also stressed the need to increase pressure on Russia, noting that the forthcoming 19th sanctions package must cover key sectors such as Rosatom, oil and gas, banking, and the shadow fleet.
The presidents further discussed the European perspective of Ukraine and Moldova. According to Mr. Nausėda, Ukraine's membership in the European Union is a shared strategic goal.
Finally, the talks also addressed the issues of illegal migration and the preservation of historical memory.
