Before you set off, find out more: Spanish MFA launches #ViajaSeguro campaign to prevent incidents abroad

• The Spanish MFA provides a 24-hour emergency helpline, available every day of the year, for emergencies
• Citizens have access to a Travellers' Register and Travel Recommendations, essential tools for minimising and preventing risks
Today

As it does every summer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation is launching the #ViajaSeguro [TravelSafe] campaign in an effort to raise public awareness of the precautions that should be taken before any trip abroad. The Ministry provides citizens with useful tools to minimise risks and recommends registering with the Travellers' Register before any trip, as well as consulting the Travel Recommendations.

It also highlights the importance of taking out travel insurance with medical cover that includes hospitalisation and repatriation costs before travelling abroad. Having travel insurance ensures access to the necessary medical care, which can be particularly expensive in certain countries.

Before travelling, find out more

The Ministry's website provides access to Travel Recommendations that contain useful and up-to-date information on each country. At the start of these Recommendations there is a section entitled Important notes which includes an alert level for each country, as well as information on the necessary travel documents, vaccinations and safety conditions to bear in mind.

Before travelling abroad, the Ministry also recommends registering with the Travellers' Register, which enables the Spanish authorities to locate or contact, where possible, registered Spanish travellers in the event of a serious emergency. This service is completely free of charge and offers all the necessary guarantees of confidentiality.

24-hour telephone helpline

In case of need, the 88 Spanish Consulates-General abroad, as well as the 2 Spanish Consulates and the 90 Consular Sections within Spanish Embassies, deal with any emergencies that may arise. In 2025, Spanish consular offices handled around 9,000 collective and individual emergencies abroad, as reflected in the latest consular activity report. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides an emergency helpline available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, for emergencies, as well as for assistance to victims of gender-based violence and consular protection in general.

The #ViajaSeguro campaign also calls on travellers to act responsibly, reminding them that, once abroad, they are subject to the legal system of their destination country, the rules and regulations of which they must observe and respect at all times.
