ICYMI: Representative Tran Votes to Protect Women’s Choice in Health Care

Washington, DC - In case you missed it, U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) voted against two pieces of legislation last week that would threaten women's access to safe, comprehensive, medically-accurate reproductive health information and care.

H.R. 6495 would allow states to divert Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds to "crisis pregnancy centers," non-medical facilities that use shame and misinformation about maternal health and pregnancy to discourage women from seeking abortions. H.R. 6914 would force higher education institutions to provide coercive, non-comprehensive maternal health information to pregnant students receiving federal aid, limiting unbiased access to a range of reproductive care options among low-income students.

"I'm disappointed that the Republican majority in Congress has used our limited voting time to relaunch a crusade against women's autonomy in healthcare instead of passing legislation to lower costs for American families," said Representative Tran. "These bills do nothing to keep women safe as they navigate their pregnancies, and instead rely on coercive and misleading tactics to discourage women from exploring a range of health care options. A woman's decision to have a child is deeply personal and cannot be decided arbitrarily by the government or medically-unqualified third party actors. Our health care system should equip women with the information, resources, and compassionate care they deserve to make the reproductive care choices that are right for them."

Representative Tran is a vocal advocate in the fight for choice in women's health care. He has cosponsored several pieces of legislation to protect women's autonomy in reproductive care, including:

In October 2025, Tran stood with Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC)to highlight the devastating local impacts of Republican health care cuts that have forced the closure of PPOSBC's primary care service, leaving 13,000 patients across Southern California without access to basic medical care.
