Criminal Justice Faculty Earn National Fellowships

Two North Carolina Central University (NCCU) criminal justice scholars are shaping the national conversation on public safety.

Michael Tucker, Ph.D., and Claude Maye, D.C.J, have been appointed fellows for the Institute for Homeland Security and Emergency Management (IHSEM) Fellowship, marking a new milestone in NCCU's growing influence in homeland security and criminal justice reform.

Tucker, assistant professor and senior fellow, is a thought leader on domestic and international security issues. His recent and forthcoming publications, "The Correlates of Right-Wing Extremism" (Ethics International Press, 2024) and "The Evolution of American Extremism" (Perspectives in Terrorism, 2025), establish him as a national voice on emerging security threats.

Before joining academia, Tucker spent more than 30 years in law enforcement and federal service, including roles as lieutenant with the Passaic County Sheriff's Office and federal security inspector with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He holds a doctorate degree in criminal justice: homeland security from Liberty University and a master's degree in homeland security from American Military University.

Maye '90, '93, assistant professor and research fellow, brings extensive experience in correctional leadership and reform. His career includes service as warden of the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, and the South Bay Correctional and Rehabilitation Facility in Florida. His expertise in correctional management and institutional reform has strengthened justice and rehabilitation systems nationwide.

A proud NCCU alumnus, Maye earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in criminal justice. He later completed a Doctor of Criminal of Justice at Pennsylvania Western University in 2024. His work continues to advance evidence-based practices that promote accountability and humane leadership within the criminal justice system.
