Cryptids: Fact or Folklore? Fairmont State’s Debate Team Tackles Big Issues at the Folklife Center

From eerie shadows in the hills to glowing eyes in the night, West Virginia's legendary creatures have captured imaginations for generations. Are these monsters real, or just spooky campfire stories passed down through the years?

In a two-part Halloween debate, the Fairmont State University Debate Team will face off over the truth behind the Mountain State's most famous cryptids. The debate will be held at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center on Monday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m., and Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 12:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available.

"We can't wait to watch the facts and folklore fly," said Folklife Center Director Lydia Warren, Ph.D. "We're wondering if Veggie Man or any other local cryptids will be in attendance to ensure their side is heard."

Fairmont State's Policy Debate Team competes regionally and nationally, tackling challenging issues in U.S. labor, policy and governance. Revived under the College of Liberal Arts, the team is dedicated to research-driven advocacy, critical thinking and persuasive communication. While their usual work unfolds in fast-paced academic tournaments, the team is eager to step into the public spotlight with this special Halloween debate-bringing their competitive edge and love of argumentation to the Fairmont community for a night of spirited, spooky fun.

"Our students love finding creative ways to make debate accessible and fun," said Dr. Samantha Godbey, director of the Civics Institute and debate team coach. "This event channels that energy into something perfectly West Virginian-where folklore meets critical inquiry."
