Interception of vessels of the “Global Sumud Flotilla” by Israel

The Brazilian Government is following with concern the interception by the Israeli Navy of vessels of the "Global Sumud Flotilla," which carry Brazilian citizens on board, among them members of the Brazilian Parliament.

In light of initial reports of the detention of Brazilian nationals aboard the flotilla's vessels, among whom is Federal Congresswoman Luizianne Lins, Brazil recalls the principle of freedom of navigation in international waters and underscores the peaceful nature of the flotilla.

The Brazilian Government deplores the military action of the Government of Israel, which violates rights and puts at risk the physical integrity of activists engaged in a peaceful action. In the context of this condemnable military operation, Israel now bears responsibility for the safety of those detained.

Brazil reiterates, in this regard, its call for the immediate and unconditional lifting of all Israeli restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, in accordance with Israel's obligations as the occupying power under international humanitarian law.

The Embassy of Brazil in Tel Aviv is in permanent contact with Israeli authorities in order to provide appropriate consular assistance to Brazilian nationals, as established by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
