For over 30 years, At Home with Merle Burleigh has been more than a weekly column. Through her writing on the City's website and through the West Chicago Press, Merle has been a trusted voice in West Chicago, telling the stories of the people, local events, businesses, and organizations that have served as the backbone of our community.
Merle is an independent writing and editing professional and has been a proud resident of West Chicago for over 40 years. Her column covered everything from local schools and churches to community organizations, city departments, and small businesses. Merle's dedication to West Chicago did not however start and stop with her gathering every news items available, but she was also a dedicated member of many local nonprofits and served on numerous city commissions and committees.
With her final column published on December 31, 2025, we reflect on Merle's remarkable contribution to the city and its community. Her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to documenting life in West Chicago have created a lasting record of the city's milestones and everyday moments. Her stories kept neighbors informed, highlighted local efforts, supported small businesses, and reminded us all of the strength and spirit of our city.
