Ebola Outbreak surpasses 1,000 Deaths

Over the past week, Direct Relief has delivered 399 shipments of requested medical aid to 36 U.S. states and territories and 23 countries worldwide. The shipments contained 17.9 million defined daily doses of medication.

Medications and supplies shipped this week included treatments for rare diseases, nutritional supplements, syringes, and cold-chain storage equipment.

Monitoring the DRC Ebola Outbreak

As the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda reaches more than 1,035 deaths across roughly 2,557 confirmed cases, Direct Relief is actively responding and remains in close contact with frontline partners.

This includes coordination with regional and international partners such as Africa CDC and the International Organization for Migration, helping ensure Direct Relief is positioned to respond quickly as needs are identified.

To date, Direct Relief has sent 8 shipments totaling 137 pallets (19.5 tons), valued at $11.3 million, to four partner organizations:

• VillageReach (Bunia, Ituri): more than 262,000 N95 respirators - donated by 3M and the largest single shipment of N95s sent in response to this outbreak - along with protective coveralls, eye protection, and essential medicines including antibiotics, cardiovascular and diabetes medications, and oral rehydration salts

• Jericho Road Wellness Clinic (Goma, North Kivu): a $2.5 million shipment of protective gear, supportive care treatments, diagnostics, and medicines to manage complications and coexisting health conditions

• Association des Diabétiques du Congo (ADIC) (Goma): insulin, injection supplies, and emergency clinic medications
• IOM (South Sudan, at the Juba-DRC border): anti-infectives, NCD medications, oral rehydration salts, water purification supplies, and PPE

Mobile Medical Teams Reach Remote Communities in Kenya

Alabaster International recently completed a medical relief trip to Kenya, using medical supplies donated by Direct Relief to treat patients across multiple remote villages, including Endonyolasho, Lolupe, and Letea.

The team, partnering with local Community Health Workers (CHWs) from Letea Dispensary, addressed a range of medical conditions including malnutrition, upper respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and skin conditions such as scabies and dermatitis. Care included de-worming and Vitamin A dispensing, medication distribution, and malnutrition assessments, reaching approximately 690 patients.

Responding to a Gap in Care

After a community feeding program stopped in January, causing preschool-aged children in the area to stop attending school, the team worked with Letea Dispensary CHWs to locate the children throughout the surrounding villages for nutrition screening. The group assessed more than 40 children, finding that roughly 30% showed signs of malnutrition, and connected each child with the dispensary for ongoing follow-up care.

"This is the power of mobile medicine, community partnership, and the care that Direct Relief makes possible," the group noted in its trip report.

Cholera Prevention Supplies Reach Mozambique's Ministry of Health

Mozambique continues to face combined flooding and cholera outbreaks, placing additional strain on health services for displaced and border communities. To strengthen the Government of Mozambique's response, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) facilitated the delivery of essential health commodities to the Ministry of Health through its partnership with Direct Relief.

The shipment included cholera kits, personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency medical backpacks, antiparasitic and anti-infective agents, electrolyte and hydration therapies, orthopedic supports, and other medicines and medical supplies.

Ensuring the availability of essential medicines is critical to responding to immediate health needs and reducing the risk of further disease transmission. These items will support cholera prevention and response activities addressing health needs resulting from climate shocks and displacement.
