Senator Markey: “No Health Care, No Deal”

Markey vows to continue fight for affordable health care as Republicans work to cram through budget bill without health care guarantees

Watch: Markey Floor Speech

Washington (November 10, 2025) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security, today delivered remarks on the Senate floor before the Senate plans to vote on a deal to reopen the federal government. On Sunday, Senator Markey announced that he will vote against legislation that does nothing concrete to reduce health care costs for 22 million American families, including 337,000 people in Massachusetts.

Below is an excerpt of Senator Markey's remarks as prepared:

"Our dedicated federal government workers deserve to get paid, and I am glad this deal means the government will reopen, that public servants will be returning to work, and that they will receive their paychecks, including back pay. I am also pleased that this deal will prevent Donald Trump from further delaying SNAP benefits for hungry children, senior citizens, and families. Using hungry people as political pawns -- which is what Donald Trump has been doing -- is disgusting.

"But this legislation does nothing concrete to lower costs or protect health care for millions of Americans from MAGA Republican attacks. I cannot support it. We should be fighting for transformative policies that fix our broken health care system and bring us back from the brink of this crisis. That's what the American people want.

"To all the Senate Republicans inclined to oppose a simple one-year extension of the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits when a vote is held in December - credits that are hugely popular in both red and blue states -- just remember that you do so at your political peril. The American people are watching. They are angry, and they want to know we are on their side. They will remember your vote at the ballot box."
