Message from President Hogue on the Passing of Dr. James Dobson

It is with deep sorrow that Colorado Christian University acknowledges the passing of Dr. James C. Dobson. Dr. Dobson, a distinguished psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, and founder of Focus on the Family, devoted his life to strengthening marriages, guiding parents, and advocating for Christian family values. His legacy as one of the most influential faith-based voices of our time is undeniable.

Dr. Dobson's impactful ministry and his breadth of public engagement made a lasting impression on countless individuals and communities. Not only was he a trusted counselor and advocate, but also a longtime friend and collaborator with Colorado Christian University.

In 2017, he was a proud recipient of the William L. Armstrong Award - an honor recognizing exceptional leaders who exemplify faith, family, and freedom - underscoring his alignment with the values held dear by our university.

On a personal note, Dr. Dobson's influence shaped even my own family's life and faith. My parents, longtime admirers of his ministry, read his book Bringing Up Boys with great respect and appreciation. Like Dr. Dobson, I was raised in the Church of the Nazarene, and our shared background created an immediate bond when I had the privilege of meeting him twice. His humility, warmth, and steadfast faith left a deep impression on me - one that I will carry always.

On behalf of the entire CCU family, I extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife Shirley, their children Danae and Ryan, as well as to grandchildren and extended family. We celebrate Dr. Dobson's life, his unwavering faith, and his tireless commitment to families worldwide. While we mourn his loss, we also remain grateful for the powerful example he set and the enduring influence of his ministry.

It is my hope that our students will look to Dr. Dobson's life as a model of faithful leadership - committed to Christ, family, and the betterment of culture - and follow in his footsteps with courage and conviction.

May God grant peace and comfort to all who grieve, and may Dr. Dobson's legacy continue to inspire future generations.
