City of Tuscaloosa Police Department Recognized for Expanding Mental Health Crisis Response Training

The City of Tuscaloosa Police Department (TPD) was recently recognized at the Alabama Chiefs of Police Conference for its leadership in expanding mental health crisis response training. The department received the Excellence in Mental Health Award through the VitAL initiative, which honors departments that show a strong commitment to Mental Health First Aid training and enhancing their response to mental health-related calls.

Since early 2022, TPD has trained more than 300 personnel through 16 Mental Health First Aid sessions to help identify mental health challenges, safely de-escalate crisis situations and connect individuals with appropriate resources and support services. Participants have included patrol officers, dispatchers, investigators and administrative personnel. TPD has also expanded its Behavior Intervention Team and added two social workers who aid officers in responding to mental health-related needs.

"The Tuscaloosa Police Department appreciates this recognition and the work VitAL does to strengthen how first responders address mental health needs," said Acting Chief Sebo Sanders. "Our officers have worked hard over the past several years to improve how we respond to these calls. This training helps us recognize when someone needs help and how we can connect them with treatment and other resources. We often see firsthand how that approach can change and sometimes even save people's lives."
