Representative Derek Tran Meets with Local Law Enforcement to Discuss Community Safety Priorities

Orange County, CA - U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) accompanied deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) on ride-alongs to discuss shared priorities for community safety.

Representative Tran spoke with Deputies from OCSD and LASD about his work to support local law enforcement, especially as community authorities grapple with staffing shortages, recruitment, and retention. Tran heard firsthand accounts about law enforcement efforts to fight crime in Orange and LA Counties, and emphasized his commitment to securing the necessary resources for public safety authorities to prevent crime, hold perpetrators accountable, and strengthen community trust.

"I was honored to meet with OCSD and LASD deputies to see their efforts to keep our communities safe firsthand," said Representative Tran. "These public servants are on the ground every day, serving our community and protecting our families. It's critical that Congress continue to support our local authorities with the funding they need to keep us safe. I remain committed to ensuring our officers receive the fair pay and robust benefits they are entitled to, and to protect their right to collectively bargain."

As a member of the Bipartisan Congressional Law Enforcement Caucus, Representative Tran remains dedicated to bolstering local law enforcement efforts to ensure our community's safety. During National Police Weekin May 2025, Tran met with LASD and OCSD personnel and discussed the urgent need to ensure fair compensation for law enforcement officers. Representative Tran has also cosponsored several bills to support and enhance officer safety and wellness on the job, including:

• H.R. 5319, the Bipartisan Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program Expansion Act, to further assist local governments with purchasing protective gear for officers;
• H.R. 309, the bipartisan National Law Enforcement Officers Remembrance, Support, and Community Outreach Act, which would improve officer safety and wellness programs;
• H.R. 3304, the Providing Child Care for Police Officers Act, to support parents in law enforcement, and;
• H.R. 2502, the Law Enforcement Training for Mental Health Crisis Response Act, would provide officers with the training necessary to safely respond to behavioral health crises.

Tran has signed onto multiple letters expressing support for local public safety efforts, including letters opposing President Trump's consideration of the Insurrection Actto justify deploying federal forces to patrol U.S. cities and advocating for increased resourcesfor state and local law enforcement agencies to perform their duties safely and effectively.
