Threats to Father Mattia Ferrari and links between the main suspect and Frontex

Threats to Father Mattia Ferrari and links between the main suspect and Frontex

29.10.2025

Priority question for written answer P-004238/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Sandro Ruotolo (S&D)

Avvenire has revealed the identity of the man accused of threatening Father Mattia Ferrari, the Italian chaplain of Mediterranea Saving Humans, an NGO. His name is Robert Brytan, an IT director linked to Asseco Business Solutions, which provides data platforms and services to Frontex.

Brytan reportedly had access to confidential data and used two social media profiles (@rgowans and @Up_yours_Haftar) to disseminate content and images taken from intelligence sources. He is set to stand trial in Modena on 5 November 2025.

Given the serious nature of the situation and the potential threat to the EU institutions' data security and credibility:

  • 1.Is the Commission aware of the above, and has it launched an international investigation on the existence of potential links between Frontex, its contractors and Mr Brytan?
  • 2.What measures will it take to verify the integrity of the contractual processes for the provision of IT services and prevent undue access to confidential data?
  • 3.How will the Commission ensure that human rights defenders and sea rescuers are protected from intimidation campaigns involving actors who work for, or have access to, EU structures?
