Pioneers Host Historic CCAA Tournament with Championship Stakes on the Line

It's win-or-go-home time in Hayward - and this year, it's something even bigger.

For the first time ever, Cal State East Bay is hosting the CCAA Softball Tournament, putting the Pioneers at the center of the postseason with a championship and an NCAA Tournament berth on the line.

Cal State East Bay enters the week as the No. 2 seed after a strong 38-14 season, including a 20-12 mark in conference play. The Pioneers will open tournament play on Thursday, May 7 at 2:30 p.m. against Cal Poly Humboldt.

The tournament, held at Pioneer Softball Field, also introduces a new format. Five teams will compete, beginning with a single-elimination game on Wednesday between the two lowest seeds. From there, the remaining teams will be reseeded and battle through a double-elimination bracket from Thursday through Saturday. The last team standing earns the conference title and an automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The Pioneers will rely heavily on one of the best pitchers in the conference - and one of the most consistent players in program history.

Junior right-hander Marissa Quintero was named CCAA Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season. She dominated throughout the year, winning 25 games with a 1.15 ERA while holding opponents to a .174 batting average and allowing just one home run across nearly 200 innings.

But the Pioneers bring more than just pitching into the postseason. Offensively, they have a powerful lineup. In total, four Pioneers earned All-Conference recognition this season, highlighting the depth and balance that helped power the team to one of its best records in recent years.
