The City of North Port Parks & Recreation Department's D-Fy (Drug Free Youth) program is proud to recognize Red Ribbon Week, taking place Oct. 23-31. This year's theme, "Life is a Puzzle. Solve it Drug Free," encourages young people to embrace healthy lifestyles and make positive decisions.
In support of this effort, the North Port City Commission issued a proclamation on Oct. 2 officially declaring Oct. 23-31, 2025, as Red Ribbon Week in the City of North Port.
Red Ribbon Week is the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign, reaching millions of young people each year. Locally, D-Fy provides students with education, activities and resources that promote a drug-free lifestyle.
"Programs like D-Fy give teens a powerful voice and a positive peer group," said D-Fy Coordinator Kevin Mace. "When combined with national awareness efforts like Red Ribbon Week, we can help young people build confidence, connect with others making healthy choices and see that they are not alone."
According to prevention data, every $1 invested in community-based prevention generates a return of $5 to $18 in reduced costs tied to healthcare, criminal justice, lost productivity, and family support services. By combining awareness with action through programs like D-Fy, North Port can make a lasting impact. Research also shows that when teens are recognized and rewarded for healthy choices, they are more motivated to continue those behaviors. D-Fy reinforces this by providing positive incentives such as leadership opportunities, social recognition, and fun activities.
Throughout the week, students and community members are encouraged to show their support by wearing red and pledging to live drug-free. New and existing D-Fy members will take part in scheduled activities at the Morgan Family Community Center and will be recognized for their commitment to a substance-free lifestyle, serving as role models for peers across North Port.
