NEW YORK CITY (October 2, 2025) - The federal government shutdown will have far-reaching impacts on the lives of New Yorkers across the five boroughs. Millions of our vulnerable community members who depend on critical services are now left in limbo, uncertain how they will feed their families, support their children's education, see a doctor, or keep a roof over their heads. This is while nearly 46,000 federal workers in our city are suddenly without paychecks.
For 87 years, United Way of New York City has been rising to meet moments of crisis, including Hurricane Sandy, COVID-19, and the ongoing migrant crisis. Today, in immediate response to the shutdown, we have reactivated the Emergency Assistance and Community Needs (EACN) Fund to rapidly deploy resources to community-based organizations that are the first line of response for impacted New Yorkers.
Our safety net may be under attack, but history shows that New Yorkers always unite when it matters the most and this time is no different. We invite all who can to join us in keeping families afloat by donating today.
That is why we are seeking to raise $1 million for the EACN Fund. Funds raised will support critical services that will empower community-based organizations with resources they need to keep the city running. EACN funds will be deployed initially to ten organizations with extended support that may be necessary with more cuts on the horizon and further disruption of essential services.
Join us and be the bridge by supporting the EACN Fund today: https://unitedwaynyc.org/emergency-assistance-community-needs-fund/
