April 10, 2026 Governor Morrisey Celebrates WVU Championship Teams ...

Morgantown, WV - Governor Patrick Morrisey joined West Virginia University officials, coaches, and student-athletes today to recognize multiple championship teams and celebrate a historic year for Mountaineer athletics.

"These teams represent what happens when you put in the work, stay disciplined, and come together as a team," said Governor Morrisey. "They've made this university proud, they've made this state proud, and they've shown the entire country what West Virginia is capable of."

The West Virginia University rifle team captured its 21st national championship, continuing one of the most dominant runs in collegiate athletics. The team was led by Griffin Lake, who earned the overall individual national title and was named Most Outstanding Performer, along with key contributions from Océanne Muller and other members of the squad.

The WVU men's basketball team won the College Basketball Crown championship in Las Vegas, highlighted by standout performances from several mountaineers, including Honor Huff, who was the tournament's MVP with a 38-point performance in the overtime victory.

The women's basketball team, powered by standout performances from JJ Quinerly, secured a Big 12 Championship and hosted an NCAA Tournament game in Morgantown for the first time in more than 30 years.

"These student-athletes are building habits that will carry them far beyond their time on the court or the range," Governor Morrisey said. "What they've accomplished this year is impressive, but what they've learned about teamwork, discipline, and perseverance will serve them for the rest of their lives. We're proud of them, and we're excited to see what comes next."
