09/12/2025 - City Council Statement on Political Violence

City Council Statement on Political Violence

In the aftermath of another senseless death motivated by political violence, it's more important than ever to acknowledge that these kinds of hateful acts drive a wedge amongst us, encourage the taking of sides and embolden actions driven by hate.

What's needed now is to see each other's humanity and to respond with sadness and empathy for those whom we've lost because they embraced their right to hold differing views, run for office, or serve in a political role.

Regardless of beliefs or political party, we must see the inherent dignity in our fellow Americans - especially when we disagree with them. Violence, and especially gun violence, is not the answer to resolving differences. We cannot threaten, terrorize, shoot or physically attack those we disagree with or cause harm to others who are going about their daily lives to bring attention to a cause.

Instead, we should be continually striving to understand one another better, care for one another, and work together to solve the consequential challenges we face today as neighbors, community members, and fellow Americans.
