Saints in any major can now declare a minor in Sustainability Studies to complement their degree program with the knowledge and skills needed to advance a more sustainable future for human institutions and the natural world.

"The new minor in Sustainability Studies equips students with the competencies that are needed in all sectors of the economy as climate change advances and natural resources become scarcer," said Kate Meierdiercks, Ph.D., professor of environmental studies and sciences and director of Siena's Academic Center for Sustainability. "Sustainability encompasses a set of issues and concerns that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. It's not just about understanding the science of sustainability - it's about preparing ethical leaders who can design interdisciplinary solutions that balance ecological, social, and economic well-being for generations to come. Siena's minor draws on expertise and courses from all three Schools: Science, Business, and Liberal Arts."

Why study sustainability?

Interdisciplinary Focus: This minor integrates courses across all three schools, including environmental science, political science, management, philosophy and more.
Career Readiness: Prepare to join the green workforce by developing and practicing key sustainability skills and competencies.
Make a Difference: Join the Sustainability Scholars program and help design, implement, and promote campus sustainability projects.
Hands-On Learning: Participate in internships, independent studies, and guided research projects that offer real-world experience.

  • The minor requires a minimum of 18 credits, with a core of six credits in the following:
SUST200 - Introduction to Sustainability: Principles and Practice (3 credits)
    and
  • SUST498 - Internship in Sustainable Planning and Problem Solving (1-3 credits) OR SUST499 - Independent Study in Sustainability (1-3 credits)

Another 12 credits in elective courses from three different competency categories round out the minor. Click here for program details.

Environmental studies major Matthew Conger '27 just declared Sustainability Studies as his minor.

"I'm excited about Siena's launch of the Sustainability minor and being one of the first to earn it is definitely special," said Conger. "This new minor takes our environmental studies knowledge and makes it even more broadly applicable, not just to business but to any field that focuses on sustainability, giving us a massive edge in landing a great job right after graduation."
