Mayor O’Connell Honored with NAMI “Hero in the Fight” Award

Taunton, MA - Mayor Shaunna O'Connell recently received the "Hero in the Fight" Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Bristol County. NAMI of Bristol County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness through advocacy, education, and support.

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Brenda Venice of NAMI Bristol County presented Mayor O'Connell with the award during a ceremony held at Taunton State Hospital. Also recognized at the event were Anna De Araujo, Lisa Goncalves and Paul Nett for their contributions to advancing mental health awareness and support within the community.

"I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from NAMI Bristol County. Brenda Venice and NAMI are engaged in life-saving work and it is an honor to support their efforts," said Mayor O'Connell. "I am proud to work alongside so many dedicated individuals and organizations who are helping to reduce stigma, expand services, and make sure that everyone-especially our young people-has access to the support they need."

The "Heroes in the Fight" Award acknowledges people who provide care and support for individuals and their families. The program also recognizes and celebrates the heroic work of those who advocate for better mental health services and make a difference in their community.

Brenda Venice of NAMI Bristol County expressed her appreciation of O'Connell. "It was such an honor to present the award to Mayor O'Connell for her remarkable commitment to improving the lives of families and individuals affected by mental illness. Her attendance at events at Taunton Hospital always shows her heartfelt care for the patients and staff at Taunton State Hospital."

Mayor O'Connell's long-standing commitment to mental health advocacy began during her tenure as a State Representative, where she served on the Committee on Mental Health and Substance Use. She was a strong advocate for policies that expanded access to mental health servicesandimproved oversight of treatment programs across the Commonwealth.

As Mayor, O'Connell has continued her focus on children's mental health and well-being. Under her leadership, the City of Taunton has funded summer programs emphasizing social-emotional learning for youth in underserved communities. She partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Taunton to fund and launch the Mental Health Collaborative, which provides on-site social workers in after-school programs to support children's mental and emotional development.

NAMI Bristol County's recognition of Mayor O'Connell highlights her ongoing dedication to promoting mental health awareness, expanding access to care, and supporting programs that strengthen families and improve quality of life throughout Taunton and the region. ###
