Arbor Day

On a beautiful Saturday morning on October 18, community members gathered with Urban Forestry staff and community partners to celebrate the trees and community of the Cully Neighborhood at Portland's 136th Arbor Day. One hundred and fifty community members visited Sacajawea Head Start to participate in the festivities. Let's take a look at all that went into the celebration.

Tree Planting

Thanks to a host of wonderful volunteers, we were able to plant 15 new trees in the back of the school. This planting is a part of a larger effort to green the school yard through the Learning Landscapes program. By the end of the year, there will be a total of 35 trees around the school.

Tree-themed Activities

Community members were able to appreciate trees through wreath making with tree parts, learn to identify common trees from the neighborhood, and take home free books from the library and our community book exchange.

Event Tabling

There were lots of opportunities to learn about trees and Urban Forestry through educational tables at the event.

Some programs highlighted were:

  • Pest management focusing on the emerald ash borer
  • Yard Tree Giveaway
  • Heritage Trees
  • Portland Urban Forest Plan

There was tabling by community partners offering resources for participants. We are grateful to Verde NW, Multnomah County Library, Multnomah County REACH, Portland Public Schools Early Learners, Greater Northwest Community Health Collective,Cully Association of Neighbors, and Oregon WIC for supporting our event and the community.

And Great Food

Thanks to EL Pilon restaurant, Mr. Farms LLC, and the Northeast Emergency Food Program, neighbors were able to enjoy delicious hot food and take home fresh produce, and shelf-stable goods.

Thank you to everyone who visited, tabled, and helped plant trees on our big day. We are grateful for all of your work and cannot wait to do this all over again next year!
