Welcome Carla Freedman to the Northern District Bench

The Board of Judges of the Northern District of New York has selected Carla Beth Freedman to serve as a Magistrate Judge in Syracuse. Ms. Freedman will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Magistrate Judge Thérèse Wiley Dancks in February 2026.

Carla B. Freedman served as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York from October 2021 through February 2025 and previously served as the Narcotics Chief in that office from January 2018 to October 2021; she joined the office as an Assistant United States Attorney in 2007. Before joining the United States Attorney's office, Ms. Freedman was an assistant district attorney in the New York County District Attorney's office in Manhattan from 1988 to 2004.

Ms. Freedman received her Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University in May 1985 and her Juris Doctor from New York Law School in June 1988.

The Board of Judges and court staff are delighted to welcome Judge Freedman to the Northern District bench. Her extensive experience in the United States Attorney's office will serve the litigants and public well in her new position as a United States Magistrate Judge.
