Direct Relief Monitoring Severe Spokane Wildfires Amid Mass Evacuations

Direct Relief is closely monitoring the fast-moving wildfires affecting the Spokane, Washington, area, including the Old Trails Fire, Autumn Lane Fire, and Fairview Fire. Fueled by strong winds and prolonged drought conditions, the fires have prompted widespread evacuation orders across northwest Spokane, destroyed hundreds of homes and other structures, disrupted power, and forced the evacuation of at least one hospital.

No official containment has been reported for any of the three fires as firefighters continue responding to one of Washington's most active wildfire seasons in recent years.

Wildfires can significantly disrupt access to healthcare by forcing hospital and clinic evacuations or closures, displacing patients, interrupting access to medications, and affecting healthcare workers' ability to reach the communities they serve. Smoke and poor air quality can also worsen respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, particularly for older adults, children, and people with chronic illnesses.

In coordination with the Washington Primary Care Association, Direct Relief's Emergency Response Team is in contact with local healthcare partner, Community Health Association of Spokane, and Gonzaga University to better understand conditions on the ground and assess emerging healthcare needs.

Direct Relief has also initiated outreach to the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), the Primary Care Association Emergency Management Advisory Coalition (EMAC), and the Northwest Regional Primary Care Association to maintain situational awareness and identify any support that may be needed by community health centers and other safety-net providers.

Direct Relief will continue monitoring the Spokane-area wildfires, assess evolving needs, and determine how best to support affected communities.
