Wayne State University, Corvias announce 2025-26 scholarship award recipients

Scholarship recipients Lee Bonnette and Jaafar Aljeraiw (second and third from left) were honored at a luncheon with leadership from WSU and Corvias.

Wayne State University and Corvias are proud to recognize recipients of the 2025-26 Wayne State Corvias Endowed Scholarship. Each year, two students are awarded $6,250 per semester for a total of $12,500 for the academic year. The scholarship is made possible by an endowment established by Corvias to help students overcome financial obstacles and achieve their academic aspirations.

This year's scholarship recipients are Jaafar Aljeraiw and Lee Bonnette. Aljerajw, Bonnette and Neveah Rogan, who was a 2024-25 award recipient. A luncheon was hosted in their honor with leaders from Corvias and WSU on campus Oct. 7.

"We appreciate our partnership with Corvias and their continued investment in our students' success," said Dr. Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at WSU. "Students who choose to live on Wayne State's vibrant, urban campus take full advantage of all the opportunities and resources available to them at the university and throughout Detroit. We are so excited for Neveah, Jaafar, Lee and all Corvias scholarship recipients who call our campus home."

More than 2,700 undergraduate students call Wayne State home, including about one-third of first-year students.

Scholarship recipient Lee Bonnette, a first-year student from Bay City majoring in music technology, was eager to live on campus so that he could fully engage with opportunities at the university and in the city. As a resident of Wayne State's historic Thompson Home, Lee has access to specialized spaces designed with creative students in mind and lives with other students participating in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts' Living Learning Community.

"This scholarship lets me focus on my studies and not worry about how I'll pay for housing," he said. "Staying in Wayne State housing is a great experience and it's awesome to be living right in Detroit with other students."

Corvias partnered with Wayne State to build the Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments, which were completed in 2018. Of the $1 million commitment, $500,000 was donated to the scholarship endowment and $500,000 was dedicated to the 40-year housing partnership between Wayne State and Corvias in annual installments. Over the course of the partnership, an estimated 80 students will receive a scholarship, and the Wayne State Corvias Endowed Scholarship fund expects to provide scholarships to students in perpetuity.

Recipients may apply the scholarship award to tuition, fees, and room and board for on-campus housing. To be eligible, students must enroll full-time, reside in on-campus housing, demonstrate financial need, and achieve and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

"At Corvias, we are proud to support and invest in the communities where we live, work and serve," said Chris Wilson, chief executive officer of Corvias. "Our demonstrated success, long-term partnership with Wayne State University and our unique Solutions Through Partnerships approach, which provides long-term sustainable value, exemplifies our commitment to our partners and the student experience."
