Hazardous Materials Team Responds to Chemical Vehicle Fire

San Rafael firefighters, as part of the Marin County Hazardous Materials Response Team, recently responded to a vehicle fire involving a Ford Ranger owned by a local pool service that presented a significant hazardous materials challenge. The pickup truck was carrying containers of liquid chlorine and muriatic acid in the bed of the vehicle when it caught fire.

As the fire intensified, one of the chlorine containers became compromised and ruptured, releasing hazardous chemicals and creating an additional risk for emergency responders and the surrounding area.

Marin's Hazardous Materials Response Team was dispatched to safely mitigate the incident. Captain Cespedes and Firefighter Drake Martin responded as members of the regional Haz Mat Team. Firefighter Martin donned specialized protective equipment before entering the hazard zone to secure and contain the remaining chemicals, helping prevent further releases and ensuring the scene was made safe.

Incidents involving hazardous chemicals require specialized training, equipment, and coordinated response. This incident serves as an excellent example of the critical role our Hazardous Materials Team plays in protecting the community and supporting safe emergency operations throughout the region.
