Long-Term Single Lane Closure Installed on I-285 in Smyrna, Vinings this Thursday 7/16
Full Closure I-285, S. Atlanta Rd to Paces Ferry Rd Planned 7/24-7/27
ATLANTA - Work crews for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will install a single right lane closure on I-285 between S. Atlanta Road (exit 16) and Paces Ferry Road (exit 18) this Thursday, July 16 which is scheduled to remain in place for approximately two weeks. These lane closures are related to the I-285 Westside Rebuild concrete slab reconstruction and rehabilitation project currently ongoing from Collier Drive in Fulton County to Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County. The work includes improvements to the roadway shoulder lanes, the concrete median, signage, guardrail and ATMS/ITS systems.
Weather and on-site conditions permitting, this lane closure is scheduled to be installed at 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 16 and remain in place for approximately two weeks:
-
I-285 northbound and southbound:
-
One right lane and the right shoulder lane closed between S. Atlanta Road (exit 16) and Paces Ferry Road (exit 18)
Lane closures are needed to ensure there is ample room for crews to safely work and for motorists' safety during the concrete slab rehabilitation activities, as large equipment will be on-site. Roadside message boards and signage will alert drivers of the closures in advance.
This $155 million project is one of two projects along the I-285 westside corridor designed to repair and/or replace concrete slabs. It is scheduled for completion in fall 2028.
NOTE REGARDING PLANNED I-285 FULL CLOSURE 7/24-7/27: Weather permitting, GDOT contractors plan a full closure of the I-285 northbound and southbound lanes between S. Atlanta Road (exit 16) and Paces Ferry Road (exit 18) beginning 7 p.m. on Friday, July 24 until 5 a.m. on Monday, July 27. No traffic will be allowed on I-285 between these locations; all traffic will be detoured around the closure. Additional information and detour routes will be released soon.
Drivers should exercise caution in and around work zones, wear seatbelts, follow signage guidance, reduce speed, move over one lane, when possible, to ensure the safety of crews, and avoid distractions behind the wheel. Motorists are urged to use the 511GA app or their preferred navigation or wayfinding apps to navigate lane and road closures if traveling on I-285 this weekend. Additional information and project history can be found on the I-285 reconstruction project website.
