Initiated by the Novato Historical Guild, a volunteer-led nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing Novato's history, the project will transform the City-owned historic Scott House at 917 Sherman Avenue into a new home for the City's museum. The renovated space will offer more room for exhibits, lectures, meetings and community events, making local history more accessible and strengthening community connections.
"This project brings together the best of both worlds: preserving the historic character of this building while creating a welcoming space where our community can gather, explore Novato's rich history, and make new memories," said Mayor Rachel Farac. "We owe a huge thank you to the Novato Historical Guild and the dedicated volunteers, who helped raise more than $3 million through the generous support of local donors."
The Mayor also recognized City staff for their work and collaboration with the Guild to help move the renovation project forward. The project builds on a long-standing public-private partnership between the City and the Guild. Under the partnership, the City retains ownership of the building, while the Guild manages the museum's day-to-day operations. To help make the relocation possible, the Guild committed to raising all funds for the project. An updated operating agreement supports the operation of the museum at the new location for the next 50 years.
This project reflects the City's commitment to preserving Novato's unique character and fostering a vibrant community through meaningful public spaces, programs, services and partnerships.
